Program Notes

This work recalls memories of student days at Cerritos College (1976-1978). While at Cerritos, I was fortunate to be invited to rehearse and perform with the Tuba Ensemble at California State University, Fullerton. The ensemble consisted of 4 Euphoniums and 8 Tubas. I was there to fill out the Euphonium section. Every Friday after my classes at Cerritos College, I would drive out to Cal. St. Fullerton and spend the afternoon rehearsing with their Tuba ensemble. It was a wonderful experience sitting in the middle of all those conical horns and listening to all the overtones vibrate throughout the room. The opportunity recalls special memories.

Reflections Past begins quietly with open 5ths between the four instrumental parts. It is an emotional work with expressive interweaving melodic lines and chromatic harmonies. The piece builds to an aggressive middle section marked Pesante and then returns to the quiet beginning. The work ends quietly and reflectively on a D major triad.
